What is the Literacy Lab?
Literacy Lab at YES is a program designed to give students extra support while improving reading skills and strategies. About 10-15 students are chosen from each grade to go to Lit Lab and work with me, Mrs. Tuck, or Mrs. Sloan.
If your child comes to Lit Lab, that is GREAT NEWS! He/She is getting extra help from highly qualified staff to make reading more enjoyable and less tedious!
Who am I?
My name is Mary Anne Allen. I began teaching in 1997 after graduating from Freed-Hardeman University in Tennessee. My first teaching position was at Elkin Elementary School teaching 5th grade. The next year I transferred to Forbush Elementary School, where I stayed for a few years. I taught 3rd grade, 4th grade, and 3rd/4th grade combination classes. In 2000, I was chosen as Forbush Elementary School and Yadkin County Schools Teacher of the Year. In 2004, I completed my M. Ed. from Salem College and began teaching at YES in the Literacy Lab. In 2008 I achieved National Board status and renewed in 2017.
I have a loving husband, son, and daughter-in-love. We have a mini-farm with Labradors, goats, and chickens! I like to garden, fish, play with our animals, and read books, but I don't like to dust, sweep, and mop.
